Steven Koehler, MD, FAAOS
Steven Koehler, MD, is an attending surgeon at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is the site director for the Mount Sinai Hand Fellowship's brachial plexus and congenital hand surgery rotation at Montefiore Einstein.
Dr. Koehler’s clinical focus centers on brachial plexus birth injuries, traumatic brachial plexus injuries, brachial plexus tumors, congenital hand surgery, complex reconstructive upper limb surgery, and microvascular reconstruction.
Dr. Koehler oversees the pediatric brachial plexus and reconstructive microsurgery service at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) – one the of the busiest in the country, and an international referral center. He is an internationally recognized expert in the field of brachial plexus and complex upper extremity reconstruction. Dr. Koehler regularly lectures and teaches nationally and internationally. He has been principal investigator and co-principal investigator on multiple funded research projects and his work has been published in nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Koehler obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University with a concentration in molecular biology and music. He earned his Doctor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine where he remained to complete his orthopaedic surgery residency. Following this, Dr. Koehler completed his hand, upper extremity, microvascular and plastic surgery fellowship at Duke University. Dr. Koehler is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with a subspecialty certification in Surgery of the Hand. He holds leadership positions in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and serves on multiple committees in addition to other national and international societies.
