Jean Paul Brutus, MD
Dr. Jean Paul Brutus was born in Belgium, graduated from medical school in Brussels in 1995, and trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Brussels. He spent 12 months at a prestigious private hand surgery center in Belgium and one additional year at the University of Montreal. He became a plastic surgeon in 2003 and completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, followed by a research fellowship at the Institute for Human Performance (State University of New York). He is certified by the Belgian Board of Plastic Surgery and fully licensed by the Collège des médecins du Québec. Dr. Brutus moved to Montreal in 2005, accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal, and practiced at the Hôpital de la Cité-de-la-Santé in Laval until 2010.
In 2010, Dr. Brutus opened the first private hand surgery practice in Canada. In 2016, he founded Exception MD and the Exceptional Care Network, a pioneering platform for hand surgery and therapy that emphasizes excellence in patient care through innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This network includes over 25 pioneers in hand surgery and therapy in 10 countries worldwide.
Dr. Brutus has authored 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His areas of expertise include Wide awake hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and patient experience. He is also the author of three books: "Lending Hands (Tendre la main or TLM)," "Secrets and Lies from the Operating Room," and "Elevating Your Patient Experience from Ordinary to Exceptional."
"Lending Hands (Tendre la main or TLM)" is a photography book featuring the hands of over 40 Quebec celebrities such as George Saint Pierre, Kent Nagano, Marie Mai, Sugar Sammy, and Yvon Deschamps. Twelve professional photographers donated their time and talents for this book, and the proceeds were donated to "Les Impatients" foundation, which supports people with mental health issues through art.
"Secrets and Lies from the Operating Room" is an educational book aimed at the general audience, offering insights into the realities of surgical practice and patient care, with proceeds benefiting the Welcome Hall Mission, a Montreal-based charity organization that fights homelessness and hunger in Dr. Brutus's adoptive city.
"Elevating Your Patient Experience from Ordinary to Exceptional" is designed to help healthcare professionals enhance their patient care by prioritizing empathy, communication, and patient-centeredness.
