Marta Jokiel, PT, PhD is a physiotherapist, researcher, and academic specializing in rare hereditary connective tissue disorders, with a particular focus on Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and Marfan syndrome. Her clinical and scientific work is dedicated to improving the diagnosis, functional assessment, and rehabilitation of individuals living with these complex multisystem conditions.
Dr. Jokiel leads interdisciplinary initiatives aimed at developing evidence-based rehabilitation strategies for patients with joint hypermobility, chronic pain, proprioceptive impairment, recurrent joint instability, and upper-limb dysfunction. Her research combines advanced biomechanical assessment, functional outcome measures, and patient-centered care to understand better the mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal impairment in EDS and related connective tissue disorders.
She is the Principal Investigator of an Ehlers-Danlos Society research grant investigating the biomechanics of atraumatic shoulder pain and instability in individuals with EDS and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD). Her work contributes to the growing body of international research seeking to improve clinical management and rehabilitation pathways for these underserved patient populations.
Beyond research, Dr. Jokiel is actively involved in raising awareness of rare connective tissue disorders through professional education, international collaborations, and the development of multidisciplinary care models. She works closely with clinicians, surgeons, physiotherapists, and patient organizations to promote earlier recognition of EDS and Marfan syndrome and to improve access to specialized rehabilitation.
Her current interests include shoulder and hand biomechanics, conservative management of joint instability, individualized rehabilitation programs, orthotic interventions, and the translation of scientific evidence into everyday clinical practice. Through her clinical, academic, and research activities, Dr. Jokiel is committed to advancing the quality of care and quality of life for individuals affected by rare connective tissue disorders.
