When stability and proprioception fail: bridging the gap from brain to biomechanics in the hypermobile hand. Rethinking assessment and rehabilitation in EDS and HSD.

Description

Despite growing awareness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), many clinicians continue to approach upper extremity dysfunction through a predominantly structural or orthopedic lens. However, joint hypermobility alone cannot explain the complexity of symptoms experienced by patients. 

This session will explore the mechanisms underlying upper extremity dysfunction by integrating current evidence from biomechanics, sensorimotor control, proprioception, pain science, and neuroplasticity. Participants will gain a new perspective on why patients experience recurrent instability, pain, fatigue and reduced functional performance despite minimal structural findings.

Rather than focusing on individual treatment techniques, this presentation will provide a clinical reasoning framework linking connective tissue pathology with altered sensory feedback, motor control, and dynamic joint stability. Through clinical examples and emerging evidence, attendees will learn how these mechanisms influence assessment, rehabilitation planning, and long-term management of the hypermobile upper limb.

By bridging neuroscience and biomechanics, this session aims to challenge traditional assumptions about hypermobility and provide therapists with a deeper understanding of the "why" behind current rehabilitation strategies. It will serve as a scientific foundation for evidence-informed, patient-centered care in individuals with EDS and HSD.
