Shaun D. Mendenhall, MD, is Section Head of Hand Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah and Primary Children's Hospital. He is a pediatric hand and upper-extremity surgeon with expertise in treating congenital differences, trauma, tumors, spasticity, limb loss, and peripheral nerve injuries. His clinical practice includes complex microvascular reconstruction of the upper and lower extremities, peripheral nerve surgery, and advanced care for children and adults with limb loss or partial hand loss. Dr. Mendenhall is nationally recognized for his contributions to hand and extremity surgery and has received awards from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Association for Surgery of the Hand. He is especially passionate about improving outcomes for children with neuromuscular conditions and helping patients with partial hand or digit loss optimize prosthetic use. His research focuses on advancing surgical innovation, with particular emphasis on the use of synthetic skin substitutes for soft tissue reconstruction of the hand and extremities. He also studies tendon repair technologies, outcomes of partial hand prostheses, and anatomic refinements of reconstructive procedures. Through both clinical care and research, Dr. Mendenhall strives to restore function, confidence, and quality of life for children and adults with complex hand and extremity conditions.
