April Cowan, OTR, OTD, CHT

April C. Cowan, OTD, OTR, CHT, is an Associate Professor within the entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health Professions,  University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX. She graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1990, achieved certified hand therapist specialization in 2002, and earned a post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy in 2012. She teaches classes in the management of upper extremity conditions, the use of evidence-based practice, developing professional identity, and capstone project development, implementation, and dissemination. She advises students on the completion of systematic reviews as part of the research coursework and also mentors clinical capstone projects relevant to upper extremity rehabilitation. She recently obtained funding and remains engaged in a hand therapy clinical practice in the university-sponsored pro-bono clinic for underserved persons within the local community. She is an active board member of the American Hand Therapy Foundation.
