Bryan J. Loeffler, MD

As the Chief of Hand Surgery at Atrium Health Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Upper Extremity Surgeon at OrthoCarolina, Dr. Loeffler’s career has been dedicated the development of innovative treatment strategies for patients with complex peripheral nerve injuries including brachial plexus injuries and amputations. He is a founding surgeon of both the OrthoCarolina Brachial Plexus Clinic as well as the OrthoCarolina Reconstructive Center for Lost Limbs (RCLL) amputee clinic.  Since the RCLL’s inception in 2015, it rapidly developed into a leading center for upper extremity amputee care both nationally and internationally. The clinic’s multidisciplinary approach integrates medical, surgical, occupational and physical therapy, psychological resources, and peer network support, providing comprehensive care that has set new standards in the field. Dr. Loeffler’s passion for improving the lives of amputees through surgical innovation and comprehensive care has driven the development of novel surgical techniques, such as the Starfish procedure, improving intuitive control of myoelectric prosthetics. This work has not only advanced the field of prosthetics but has also offered amputees unprecedented levels of independence and functionality. The clinic's work has garnered significant attention, featured on major media outlets and recognized with prestigious awards for surgical innovation, including the JE Hanger award and multiple accolades from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). Dr. Loeffler actively contributes to the scientific community with over 70 peer-reviewed publications and many national and international presentations, focusing on advancements in amputation care and prosthetic innovation. Dr. Loeffler is deeply committed to the ongoing advancement of neuropathic pain management and amputee care, which resulted in the collaboration to develop Targeted Brain Rehabilitation (TBR).
